A domain upgrade is a company's move from a compromise domain, such as a hyphenated, prefixed or alternative-extension name, to a stronger one, most often the exact-match .com of its brand.

Domain upgrade, explained

Upgrades usually follow traction. A startup launches on what it can afford, such as its brand with get or try in front, a .io or .ai, or a two-word version of its name, and buys the exact-match .com once revenue or funding justifies the price. The reasons are practical: customers type the plain .com, email meant for the company can land with whoever owns it, and a competitor could buy it first.

For a domain investor, companies operating on a compromise name are among the most motivated buyers of the matching .com, which makes them natural outbound targets. Keep the pitch short and factual. Mind the timing: if you registered a name after the company's brand existed and with that company in mind, offering it to them can be cited as evidence of bad faith under the UDRP. The common mistake is assuming every company wants to upgrade; many build strong brands on their current name and never buy. One path to watch is AI startups that launch on a .ai and later want the .com.

Example. A software company running on a try-prefixed .com that buys the plain one-word .com after its funding round is making a domain upgrade.
