.co domain, explained
Colombia's information and communications ministry, MinTIC, sets policy for .co. Since October 2025 the registry has been run by CentralNic, part of Team Internet Group, under a 10-year license won with Colombian registrar CCI, replacing GoDaddy Registry. Anyone can register a second-level .co without a local presence; restricted spaces such as gov.co and edu.co are handled separately. Renewal fees are typically higher than for .com, which adds up across a portfolio.
For investors, .co is a secondary market. Its natural buyers are startups that cannot get the .com, yet that .com casts a shadow: people type .com by habit, and email sent to the wrong address goes to whoever owns it. Before buying, check whether the matching .com is an active business, because that shrinks your buyer pool and raises trademark risk. In practice, short, brandable and one-word .co names resell far more readily than long keyword ones.
Example. A founder launching on a short .co while another company owns the matching .com should expect some customers and email to land on the .com by mistake.
