Also called AI visibility · AI citation
LLM citation, explained
Engines that search the web while answering retrieve pages from an index, write a response and attach the pages they drew on. A page must be reachable to be cited: OpenAI says sites that block its OAI-SearchBot crawler are left out of ChatGPT's search answers. Tracking tools also count mentions, where a brand is named in the answer without a link; AI visibility, the related term, covers both. There is no standard measure. Trackers sample sets of prompts, and results shift by engine, wording and date.
For a domain investor the term matters in two places. When selling, expect buyers to ask about AI visibility alongside search. A clear, distinctive name is easier for people and machines to attribute to one company, but no name guarantees citations, so never promise them. When buying a keyword name for a project, remember that engines cite pages, not domains: a parked or for-sale page gives them nothing to quote.
Example. Asking an answer engine which registrars support DNSSEC and seeing a registrar's help page linked under the reply is an LLM citation; seeing the registrar named without a link is a mention.
