Also called search volume · monthly search volume
Keyword search volume, explained
Google Keyword Planner reports average monthly searches for a keyword and its close variants, averaged over twelve months by default and rounded, and it shows the same exact-match figure whatever match type you choose. Third-party SEO tools estimate volume from their own data, so their numbers often disagree. Use them for scale and trend, not precision.
Volume alone does not make a name valuable. A phrase with high volume and no commercial intent has few buyers, while a low-volume phrase in an expensive market, such as a legal or medical service, can support a strong end-user price. Weigh volume against cost per click and the number of businesses selling that product. Clicks are also thinning: Pew Research Center found that Google users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% for those who did not. Treat volume as interest in a topic, not as traffic a domain will receive.
Example. The phrase had modest search volume but a high cost per click, which pointed to a small set of buyers with large budgets.
