Lander

A lander is the web page a domain displays while it is for sale, stating that the name is available and letting a visitor buy it, make an offer or start a lease-to-own plan; it is usually hosted by a marketplace.

Lander, explained

You activate a lander by pointing the domain's nameservers, or a DNS record, at the marketplace that hosts it; Afternic, Sedo, Atom and several registrars provide one with a listing. A good lander shows the price or minimum offer, payment options and a trust signal such as escrow, and loads fast on a phone. Landers can also cut costs: Sedo charges 10 percent rather than 15 on Buy It Now sales made through its own lander, and Afternic charges less on names pointed to GoDaddy's aftermarket nameservers.

Parking shows ads and earns small sums from traffic; a lander earns nothing until the name sells but presents it cleanly. Ads also carry legal risk, because UDRP panels hold owners responsible even for automatically generated pay-per-click links that target a trademark. For names you mean to sell, a lander is the safer default. RFC 10023, published in July 2026, adds a DNS companion: a TXT record at _for-sale under the domain that signals the name is for sale, even while it hosts a live site, with a link and a price that software can parse.

Example. After the owner points the nameservers to the marketplace, the lander shows a Buy It Now price in the low four figures, a monthly lease-to-own option and an escrow notice.
