A partial-match domain (PMD) is a domain that contains a target keyword plus other words, such as a brand word, place or modifier, instead of matching a search phrase exactly.

Partial-match domain, explained

Typical patterns are a keyword plus a modifier, a place plus a service, or a short brand word plus a category. The term comes from search engine optimization, where PMDs were once chosen for a ranking edge; Google now describes domain words as one of many factors and says its exact match domain system adjusts for names built to match queries, so that edge is small.

Most PMDs are end-user names with a narrow buyer pool, which makes them hard to resell. The ones that sell read naturally, contain a commercially valuable keyword and fit an obvious business. Avoid combinations that include a trademark, such as a brand name plus reviews or deals, which invite UDRP complaints. A PMD is usually better as a name to build on than as an investment held for resale.

Example. A local plumber picks a partial-match domain that joins the city name with plumbing pros because the exact-match name was taken.
