Numeric domain

A numeric domain is a domain name made only of digits, such as an NN.com, NNN.com or NNNN.com, valued mainly for its shortness and, in Chinese-speaking markets, for lucky number combinations.

Numeric domain, explained

The patterns are finite: there are exactly 100 two-digit, 1,000 three-digit and 10,000 four-digit .com names, and all are registered. That fixed supply makes them one of the most liquid name categories, with investors quoting floor prices by pattern. Much of the demand has come from China, where 8 is associated with prosperity and 4 sounds like the word for death, so names with 8s and without 4s draw more interest.

Numeric floors move with Chinese buyer sentiment and have swung sharply in past cycles, so the market behaves more like a traded commodity than like brandable names. Pattern matters: repeated digits, simple runs and 8s add value, while a 4 subtracts it. Before buying, compare recent sales for the exact pattern, and remember that liquidity here means selling to other investors at wholesale prices.

Example. An investor compares an NNNN.com with no 4s against recent sales of the same pattern and bids near the current wholesale floor, not above it.
